Small dose of whey protein before meals could improve blood sugar control in people with type 2 diabetes

Lausanne, Switzerland September 29, 2021 – New research has shown that consuming a small amount of a highly concentrated, low-calorie whey-protein solution before meals can help people with type 2 diabetes control their blood sugar. The study, designed by Nestlé Health Science, tested a whey-protein microgel developed by Nestlé Research & Development on participants with type 2 diabetes, with results showing significant benefits on post-meal blood sugar spikes and other metabolic outcomes.

The results of the study are being presented at the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) Annual Meeting on September 29, 2021, by Dr. Odd Erik Johansen, Clinical Development Lead at Nestlé Health Science.

Twenty-six people participated in the randomized study, consuming either the low dose wheyprotein microgel (10g, 40kcal) in 125 ml of water, or a placebo of 125 ml of water, followed by a meal designed to produce an adequate spike in glucose

One week into the study, participants who had been taking the whey protein were given the placebo, and those who had been taking the placebo were given the whey protein.

Results showed that during the two-hours after the meal, glucose levels were reduced by 22 percent in the whey-protein group compared with the placebo group. There was also a positive effect on the hormone GLP-1.

Nestlé Health Science plans to launch the first product based on this important research in 2022.
