Resource® ThickenUp® Clear

Product benefit

Results of a recent publication show that Resource® ThickenUp® Clear improves swallowing safety in dysphagia patients

The primary purpose of the study was to compare the effect of thin liquid and liquid thickened with Resource® ThickenUp® Clear on the incidence of aspiration.

One hundred adult patients with dysphagia were prospectively evaluated with each of the liquid types.

Twenty patients aspirated on thin liquid and 11 on liquid thickened to nectar (mildly thick) consistency.

The key finding was that there was a clinically and statistically significant reduction (45%) in the incidence of aspiration for thickened liquid compared to thin liquid. (Figure 1).

This study provides data to support evidence-based practice for speech-language pathologists, dietitians and other health care providers who care for patients with dysphagia.

Significantly fewer patients (p<0.05) aspirated on liquid thickened with Resource® ThickenUp® Clear (TUC) than thin liquid (thin).

Therapeutic effect

Researchers identify that Resource® ThickenUp® Clear contributes a therapeutic effect without increasing residue, a subject of emerging relevance to dysphagia patients.

Results are summarized in a new publication.

Clavé and colleagues studied the effect of Resource® ThickenUp® Clear using a clinical method and videofluoroscopy on 120 patients with oropharyngeal dysphagia (66 with stroke, 41 older and 13 with neurodegenerative diseases) and 14 healthy volunteers while swallowing thin-liquid, nectar-like and spoon-thick boluses.

Signs of impaired safety, and efficacy of swallow, and the physiology of the swallow response were evaluated. Resource® ThickenUp® Clear improved the safety of swallow without increasing residue, providing a viscosity-dependent therapeutic effect for patients with oropharyngeal dysphagia.
